Other People's Children

In the locker room, Claire and Kyle both vented about their apartments and roommates. They decided it would be best if they moved in together. The two soon went straight to work and met with a drunken man and his sober buddy who had come into the emergency room. The drunken man took a liking to Claire, so she did her best to treat him and thwart any advances. Claire was stricken with his sober buddy, though, and ended up scoring a date with the man. The date ended badly when the sober buddy tried to score Vicodin from the new nurse.

The parents of a young girl, Kayla, came rushing into the ER with their very sick child. As soon as Robin got the girl stabilized, they ran some tests and discovered the child needed a bone marrow transplant. The parents told Robin that Kayla had been adopted from China. Since the adoption was closed, the adoptive parents did not know how to contact any of Kayla's blood relatives. Robin did her best to find the adoption agency, to no avail. She went to Jagger for help, and the situation turned worse. Kayla had been part of a smuggling ring and had been smuggled out of China. Robin knew Kayla's birth parents were missing their daughter, but Kayla's best chance to survive the disease would be to stay in the United States. Robin went to Patrick for advice, but Patrick wanted to tell the authorities. Robin and Patrick got into a huge fight and Patrick pulled rank on Robin. She felt he should keep the secret because he was her boyfriend, but Patrick said he couldn't keep it because he was also her boss. It was too much of a liability for the hospital.

Robin went to her college buddy, Saira, for advice. The two friends talked, but Robin still had trouble telling the Kayla's parents that their child had been smuggled out of her home country. Meanwhile, Saira confessed the drama to Dr. Julian, who suddenly became irrational. Dr. Julian rushed out to the waiting area and started screaming at Kayla's parents, telling them they should be ashamed of themselves. Through Dr. Julian's antics, the parents realized the truth about their daughter's adoption. They held Robin responsible, though, and yelled at her for interfering in their business. Meanwhile, Patrick confronted Dr. Julian and warned him that he would be suspended if he had another outburst.

Meanwhile, Saira yelled at Dr. Julian for betraying her confidence. Dr. Julian said she should not have trusted him, and stormed out. Later, Saira overheard Kyle talking about his brother being adopted from Iran. Claire made a comment to Kyle that she felt sorry for Leo, and Kyle suddenly realized he should be there for his brother. Kyle went to the local bar and sat down next to his brother. He told Leo if the two brothers were different, it had nothing to do with Leo being adopted. Leo was different because he was a screw-up. Leo realized his brother was trying to comfort him, and he laughed.

Robin offered to watch Stone while Jagger worked during the day. The first day, Stone showed Robin his collection of stones and told her all the information he had learned about stones. He felt he should know a lot about stones since his name was Stone. When Robin moved a stone out of order, the young child got upset and ran away crying. Later, Robin and Patrick came home to find Stone rocking himself in a corner. They confronted Jagger about getting the child tested, but Jagger was upset at their suggestion. Jagger said he didn't need their advice for his child and he stormed off with the crying child.

Epiphany yelled at Toussaint for handing her the wrong size tubing for a patient who had come into the ER. Later, he found her in the stairwell and apologized for his mistake. Epiphany also apologized for her behavior and said her position put her in a lot of stress. Toussaint would need to learn to make decisions quickly and not take offense when he was yelled at. Toussaint realized he had a lot to learn and said he looked up to Epiphany. He just wanted to make her proud.
