Due to the Labor Day holiday, ABC opted to air encore episodes of its daytime lineup. This scheduling change was planned and there will be no "lost" episodes as a result of the preemption.
Regular programming will resume on Tuesday, September 8, and pick up where Friday, September 4's episode concluded.
Ryan and Randi were at Fusion. Ryan apologized to Randi for tak ing Spike and Emma to work. He explained that the babysitter would eventually pick up the kids. Randi told him not to worry, because she enjoyed spending time with his kids.
Emma saw a sign with Kendall on it. Ryan noticed Emma staring at the sign. Emma asked where Kendall was. Ryan explained that Kendall had gone to jail. Emma wondered if Kendall went to jail because of the things she said about Kendall. Ryan stated that Kendall went to jail because she admitted to doing bad things, not because of anything Emma said.
Erica entered Fusion, and Ryan could tell that she was upset. Erica revealed that her New Beginnings special episode on starving children in Africa received extremely low ratings. She was saddened because hardly any viewers tuned in to watch the important episode. She was also annoyed because she knew that the executives would not let her air the second part of her Africa special. Ryan reminded Erica that she was at her best during difficult times. He urged her to fight for what she believed in. She thanked him for the encouragement and they embraced.
Erica went to the television studio. She was surprised to see Opal and Krystal at the studio. Opal and Krystal commended her on the Africa special. They stated that the episode moved them. They were very proud of Erica's attempts to help the African children. They wondered when the second part of her special would air. Just then, a producer, Ron, told the three women that there would not be a second part.
Ron claimed that he loved Erica's episode on Africa, but he explained that it did not have high enough ratings to warrant another show on the subject. Erica stated that the subject was more important than the typical "fluff" they produced. He told Erica that viewers wanted a fun show, especially in the bad economy. Ron said that Erica's viewers watched her show to escape their harsh realities.
Ron proposed that Erica tape a show on makeovers. He suggested that she give Opal and Krystal surprise makeovers. Erica agreed, but seemed disappointed.
Erica told Opal and Krystal that they were replacing the starving children in Africa. Erica relayed Ron's reasons for not pursuing another episode on Africa. Opal understood why people did not want to watch a sad show during the harsh economic climate. Krystal, however, thought people in the United States should be grateful for what they had. Krystal felt that the fortunate should not turn their backs on the less fortunate. Erica said that she needed to entertain the public and give them what they wanted.
Ryan arrived at the television studio. Erica explained to Ryan that the second part of the Africa special was scrapped. He wondered if she was going to fight back. She stated that she was a professional and that she would do her job.
Erica began taping a live episode for her show. She called Opal and Krystal onto the stage to show off their new looks. Erica explained that Opal and Krystal were given "economical" makeovers. Erica asked Opal how she felt. Opal happily said, "I couldn't believe my eyes when I looked in the mirror!" Erica then asked Krystal how she felt. Krystal said that the makeover was good for her ego, but the New Beginnings episode on Africa was good for her heart. Krystal urged the viewers to request that the network play the episode again.
Ron tried to cut to a commercial when he heard talk of Africa, but Ryan ordered him to let the women speak. Ron told Ryan that he had no say in the matter. Ryan revealed that he was a major advertiser, so Ron listened to him.
Erica asked her crew to stop the teleprompter because she wanted to speak from the heart. Erica told her audience about her trip to Africa and how it changed her. She urged her viewers to "stand up" and make a difference in the lives of starving children. She affirmed that the viewers had the power to help the downtrodden children.
Jesse visited Zach and Kendall. Zach said that his plan was falling into place. Kendall revealed that she remembered everything from the night of Stuart's murder. Kendall was certain that Annie killed Stuart. Kendall assumed that Annie wanted to kill Adam because he caught her trying to kidnap Emma. Kendall knew that Annie would never confess to the crime, so she urged Zach to question Emma.
Zach refused to get Emma involved, but Kendall felt it was the only way. Plus, Kendall assumed that Emma was burdened by the lies she told. Kendall stated that it was in everyone's best interest if Zach got the truth out of Emma. Zach said he would go after Annie, not Emma.
Kendall and Jesse spoke privately. Jesse noted that, although Kendall was not in jail, she was in a prison. She admitted that it was difficult to remain hidden. She explained that writing helped her get through it. She said that writing cleared her mind, which helped her recall the night of Stuart's murder.
Zach entered Ryan's penthouse to see Spike. The babysitter checked on Spike, while Zach spoke with Emma. Emma showed Zach a picture of a prison that she drew. He assumed that the girl was thinking about Kendall when she drew it. He encouraged her to draw pictures for Kendall. Emma said that she drew pictures for her mother and asked Zach to deliver them. He agreed. The babysitter then told Zach that Spike was asleep.
Just as Zach was about to exit the penthouse, Ryan appeared. Ryan told Zach that he was welcome to visit Spike; however, Ryan warned Zach to stay away from Emma. Zach swore that he did not want to hurt Emma.
Adam secretly watched Annie and Scott as they entered the mansion after a swim. Scott and Annie were in their bathing suits and flirted shamelessly. Scott said that he had many memories of the pool from his childhood. Scott explained that he and JR used to play "shark" with Stuart, and Stuart would try to catch them in the pool. Adam then revealed himself and reminded Scott that he played the game with the boys, not Stuart. Adam snidely told Scott, "You were the easiest one to catch."
Adam wondered what people thought of his relationship with Annie. Annie did not care what others thought. She professed her love to Adam. She thanked him for teaching her that material possessions meant nothing. She was grateful for having him in her life. Adam smiled and stated that he did not care what others thought, because he was happy with Annie.
Adam asked Scott if he thought Annie really loved him. Scott wondered why his uncle was questioning her love. Adam said that he had been married enough times to know that not all marriages were based on true love. Scott urged Adam to trust Annie. Scott felt that Adam could carry on Stuart's legacy through trust. Adam said that he trusted Scott. Adam then glared at Scott and said, "Don't ever betray me."
Scott was worried over the conversation he had with Adam. Scott asked Annie if she ever showed Adam the footage of their kiss. Annie said that she did not want to show Adam the footage because it would hurt him to see Scott hitting on his future wife. Annie then assured Scott that she was not trying to seduce him.
Zach visited Annie. He gave her the pictures that Emma drew. Annie was ready to work with Zach to get revenge on Ryan. Zach assumed that Annie would do anything to get Emma back. She replied, "I already have."
Frankie woke up in a suite at the casino. He was very hung over and could not remember how he ended up at the casino. He then ran into Madison by the blackjack table. She explained that Frankie got drunk and gambled a lot. She told him that he was distraught over Randi. Madison then threatened to tell the police that Randi killed Henry, if Frankie did not pay her. Frankie said that he was tired of her threats. She noted that Frankie lost his self-confidence. She stated, "When I look at you, I don't see a loser. I just see someone that's acting like a loser."
Frankie arrived at Fusion with flowers in his hand. He gave Randi the flowers and apologized for not going home. She was very annoyed with him. He was upset because Randi depended on Jesse more than on him. Randi stated that Jesse was more supportive than Frankie. Frankie stormed out of the office.
Jesse visited Randi. Jesse said that Randi needed to mend her relationship with Frankie. Jesse noted that he covered up Randi's crime to help both her and Frankie. He told her that she owed him.
Frankie returned to the casino and ordered a drink. Madison was pleased to see him. He noted that he did not have anywhere else to go. Jesse then grabbed Frankie and told him to get away from Madison.
Jake was concerned when he saw David, Amanda, and Trevor at the hospital. Jake asked Amanda if there was something wrong with Trevor. David told Jake that he did not have the right to ask about the baby. David ordered Jake to get back to work.
JR and Tad went to ConFusion for dinner. Tad noticed that JR was not eating. JR did not think that he could hold the food down, due to his chemotherapy. Then, Angie entered the establishment. Angie asked JR how he was feeling. JR informed Angie that Tad knew about his illness. She was relieved, because she did not want JR to fight his cancer alone.
Tad received a phone call from Jake. Jake was irate because David took Amanda and Trevor to the hospital, but David would not let Jake see them. Jake was anxious to find out if Trevor was sick. Tad feared that Jake would try to harm David. Tad told Jake to remain calm. Tad then left for the hospital.
Amanda emerged from a hospital room with Trevor in her arms. She informed Jake that David insisted on having the baby examined. David snidely commented that he wanted to make sure his son was not harmed by Jake's schemes. Amanda assured Jake that the baby was fine. David told Amanda it was time to leave, but she wanted to stay with Jake. David said they needed to take the baby home for his feeding. Amanda looked sad. As she turned to leave the hospital, she whispered to Jake that she loved him.
Jake threw medical supplies in the hallway. Tad entered the hospital and saw his brother in a fit of rage. Jake was distraught because David stole his wife. Jake was also upset because he wanted to adopt Trevor. Tad urged Jake to stay away from David, especially at the hospital. Tad reminded Jake that David was his boss and could fire him. Jake did not care. Jake refused to heed Tad's advice. Jake stated that David took Dixie and Kathy away from Tad. Jake did not want to end up like Tad. Jake affirmed that he would handle David his own way. Tad promised Jake that he would help him get Amanda and Trevor back.
Jake asked the doctor that examined Trevor about the baby's health. The doctor informed Jake that the baby's name was David, Jr., not Trevor. Jake was appalled that David had changed the baby's name.
Scott saw JR at ConFusion. Scott commented that, after living in the mansion, he understood why JR became an alcoholic. JR swore that he was sober. Scott asked why JR looked terrible, but JR ignored the question.
JR sarcastically asked Scott if he was planning Adam's bachelor party. Scott felt bad that Adam chose him to be the best man, instead of JR. Scott noted that it was difficult to live in the mansion. JR accused Scott of having feelings for Annie. JR stated that Annie had a great body and that she flaunted it constantly. JR warned Scott to get Annie out of his head, or he would not be able to keep her out of his bed.
Marissa met JR at ConFusion. Marissa was upset because David stopped paying attention to her when the baby moved in. JR urged her to move out of Wildwind, but she refused because she wanted to help Amanda. JR felt that Marissa never did anything for herself. She explained that she grew up as an only child and lived a selfish existence. She wished to give back to others, especially since she reconnected with her biological family.
JR asked Marissa if she wanted to join him on a trip to a quaint cabin in the woods. She looked excited, but before she could answer, her phone rang. She spoke to Jake on her phone. Jake begged her to meet him at the hospital and she agreed. She then told JR that she would have to take a rain check on the trip.
Marissa met Jake at the hospital. Jake said that David was out of control. Jake asked Marissa if David was mistreating Amanda or Trevor. Marissa stated that David seemed mellow and happy. Marissa further noted that Amanda kept to herself and Trevor was adjusting nicely.
David asked to hold the baby. Amanda was hesitant, but gave David the child. David was elated to hold his son. David promised the baby that he would always be there for him. David said that he would raise his child to be a better man than he was. Amanda watched David hold the baby with tears in her eyes.
David told Amanda that he wanted her to be comfortable. She asked why he made her move in. He handed her a drink and said that he wanted their child to live with both of his parents. David hoped that Amanda would feel the same way in the future. Meanwhile, Jake spied on them through a window.
As JR packed for his trip, he heard a knock on his door. He was pleasantly surprised to find Marissa in his doorway. She declared that she wanted to do something for herself and revealed a suitcase. He looked very happy.
Zach told Annie that he understood unconditional love. Zach assumed that Annie would do anything for Emma. Annie replied, "I already have." Annie felt that she was a bad mother for using Emma to keep Ryan away from Greenlee. Annie regretted many of her misdeeds, and wished she'd never hurt Emma. She especially regretted trying to kidnap Emma on the night of Stuart's murder. Zach inquired why Annie did not take Emma. Annie said that she and Emma were split up.
Annie mentioned that she resented Ryan for taking her daughter away. Annie was sure that Ryan took Emma and Spike to punish her and Zach. Zach assured Annie that everyone would get what they deserved eventually.
Zach told Kendall about his conversation with Annie. He was certain that Annie would crack. Kendall was excited and kissed Zach. He kissed her back, but then pulled away. She was frustrated with him because he would not forgive her for sleeping with Ryan. She wondered what would happen to their marriage once she was exonerated. She demanded to know what Zach thought about their relationship.
Scott sat in his bed and recalled JR's warning. He then thought about Annie in her bikini. He went downstairs and found Annie. She was crying as she looked at Emma's pictures. Annie told Scott that she missed Emma immensely. Scott empathized with her because he missed Stuart. Scott said that he was extremely close to his father. He feared that he would never be that close to anyone again. She assured him that he would feel connected to another person. He then grabbed her and kissed her.
Jesse found Frankie at the casino bar with Madison. Jesse grabbed Frankie and reminded him that they had dinner plans with Angie and Randi. Frankie did not want to see Randi. Frankie blamed Jesse for most of his problems with Randi. Jesse told his son that he was making a mistake, but Frankie insisted on staying at the casino.
Jesse met Randi and Angie at ConFusion. He admitted that Frankie was not going to dinner because he was hanging out with Madison at the casino. Angie stood up and announced that she was going to put Madison in her place.
Madison urged Frankie to go home to Randi. He was surprised that Madison was trying to help him. She said that her marriage might have ended differently if Henry had gone home to her more often.
Madison and Frankie played blackjack together. He was on a losing streak, so she encouraged him to go home. She asked him if he really loved his wife. He replied that he was madly in love with Randi. He regretted not meeting her for dinner. He wanted to get her flowers and apologize, but he could hardly walk because he was drunk. She offered to help him to his suite. She told him to sleep off the booze and then see Randi in the morning, when he was sober.
Angie and Randi arrived at the casino just in time to see Madison help Frankie into the elevator. Angie wanted to chase after them, but Randi did not. Angie told Randi that she needed to fight for her marriage. Randi was distraught and left the casino.
Madison and Frankie were in a suite. She tried to give him a glass of water, but he knocked it over and spilled it on her shirt. He then passed out on the bed. She unbuttoned her blouse to dry it off.
Angie knocked on the suite and Madison answered the door with her shirt unbuttoned. Angie demanded to see Frankie. Madison slyly smiled and insinuated that she and Frankie were hooking up. Angie slapped Madison.
Randi found Jesse and told him that Frankie went to a suite with Madison. Jesse called his son stupid. Randi said that she was to blame. She regretted pushing Frankie away when he tried to help her.
Krystal and Opal were at ConFusion when Erica breezed in. They immediately congratulated Erica for standing up for her convictions during the makeover show on New Beginnings. Erica thanked Krystal and Opal for their kind words. When a network executive approached Erica, she introduced her friends to Shirley Klein. Shirley barely acknowledged Krystal and Opal as they raved about Erica's impromptu speech at the end of her show.
Shirley managed a strained smile as she bid Krystal and Opal goodbye, and then led Erica to a nearby table. When Erica was seated, Shirley announced that the viewers weren't interested in hearing about Erica's pet charities. According to Shirley, Erica's viewers wanted the uplifting fluff stories that Erica's show was famous for. Shirley explained that the network would be willing to overlook Erica's outburst if Erica agreed to apologize; they also wanted Erica's promise not to go off-message again.
Erica's response was an emphatic, "The hell I will."
Erica reminded Shirley about the "creative difference" clause in Erica's contract. Erica threatened to invoke it if the network refused to budge. Shirley shrugged as she admitted that they would miss Erica on the show. However, Shirley was confident that they could find a new host to replace Erica. As Shirley prepared to leave, Erica smirked and said that it was too bad that Shirley had not been available for the makeover show; according to Erica, Shirley's corporate look was unflattering.
At the Chandler mansion, Annie admitted that she didn't want to jeopardize her friendship with Scott because of a few kisses. Before Scott could respond, Ryan burst through the patio doors with two security guards hot on his heels. Ryan demanded to know where Emma was. Annie was stunned to realize that her daughter was missing. She insisted that Emma wasn't in the mansion, but Ryan didn't believe Annie. Scott confirmed that Annie had not left the premises and that he had not seen Emma.
Annie suggested that perhaps Emma had gone to a friend's house. Ryan claimed that he had already checked with Emma's friends. Frustrated by Annie's lack of cooperation, Ryan decided to call the police, so that they could search every inch of the mansion for his daughter.
At the Slater residence, Kendall wanted to know who Zach saw a future with: her or Liza. Zach didn't see the point of answering the question. According to Zach, he would never be able to give Kendall an answer that would satisfy her. When someone knocked on the door, Kendall snapped that Zach should answer it; it could be his future knocking. After Kendall ducked out of sight, Zach opened the door to Liza.
Liza wanted to talk to Zach about Emma. She suggested that he use Emma to get to Annie. When Zach refused to consider it, he accidentally slipped by calling her Kendall. Liza's raised eyebrow prompted Zach to explain that Kendall had made a similar suggestion while she'd been hiding at the safe-house. Liza believed Zach, but she warned him never to call her Kendall again. Moments later, the doorbell rang. It was Emma.
Zach invited Emma in and then asked if Ryan knew that she was there. Emma confessed that she had not told her father that about the visit because Ryan didn't approve of Emma talking to Zach. Emma explained that she had stopped by because she wanted to know if Zach had given her mother the painting. Emma was thrilled when Zach confirmed that he had delivered Emma's gift to Annie. Emma wondered if Zach could arrange a visit with Annie.
Liza suggested that Emma go to the Chandler mansion if she wanted to see her mother. Emma admitted that the mansion terrified her. Zach decided to call Ryan to let him know where his daughter was. A short time later, Ryan arrived to pick up Emma. Ryan stayed behind to talk to Zach, while Liza helped Emma load her bicycle into Ryan's car.
Ryan wanted to know what Zach was up to. Ryan suspected that Zach might be passing secret messages between Annie and Emma. Zach denied doing any such thing, but Ryan didn't seem to believe him. After Ryan left, Liza made a bold suggestion. She proposed wiring Emma before her visit with Annie. Zach immediately nixed the idea. Liza chuckled, "There you go, doing that noble thing that makes you so damn attractive." When she realized how her comment had sounded, she quickly added that she had not been flirting with him.
After Zach left, Liza remained behind with the boys. Kendall lurked nearby in the hallway listening as Liza told Ian that she and his father were doing everything in their power to get Kendall out of jail. Liza continued to talk about Zach, and eventually admitted that she wished her son had a father just like Ian's father. Kendall was rattled by Liza's confession.
At the Chandler mansion, Annie was relieved that Emma was safe. Scott felt sorry for Annie's plight; he imagined that it had to be difficult for her to constantly have to prove that she had recovered. Annie appreciated Scott's support. She admitted that she would miss him terribly if he followed through with his decision to move out of the mansion. Annie begged Scott to reconsider; she promised to keep her lips to herself in order to preserve their friendship. Annie was delighted when Scott agreed to remain in the mansion.
A short time later, Zach stopped by to see Annie. Zach proposed arranging a meeting between Annie and Emma. Annie questioned Zach's motivation. Zach explained that he was doing it for Emma, because she was a child in desperate need of seeing her mother. However, Zach was concerned because Emma seemed deeply afraid of visiting the mansion. Zach realized that the revelation didn't surprise Annie. Annie claimed that it made sense to her that Emma wouldn't be eager to visit a place where she'd witnessed a horrific event. Annie explained that she wanted the opportunity to show Emma that she didn't have any reason to fear her mother's new home.
At the penthouse, Ryan suggested that Emma get her homework done, so that she could watch a new DVD with her brother, Spike. Emma whooped with joy as she sprinted to her room. Moments later, a knock at the door heralded Erica's arrival. Erica told Ryan about her decision to quit New Beginnings because she had refused to apologize for her speech at the end of her last show. Ryan applauded Erica's refusal to cave in to the network's demands. He was confident that she would have offers pouring in soon.
A short time later, Erica received a phone call from someone interested in hiring Erica to host a show titled: Meltdown. Erica turned the offer down flat. After she disconnected the call, Ryan suggested that they go somewhere to brainstorm Erica's next career move. He assured her that the nanny could watch the children. Erica readily agreed.
Ryan and Erica went to ConFusion. Ryan wondered what Erica thought about the idea of designing a product line where all of the profits went to the starving children in Africa. Erica liked the idea, but she wanted something that "popped" and would raise money quickly. Ryan offered to write a check, which Erica accepted. However, she was more interested in some type of grassroots effort that would generate a constant stream of money for the charity.
Ryan was confident that Erica would think of something. In the meantime, he invited Erica to dance. As Erica and Ryan swayed to the music, the patrons watched. Everyone applauded when Ryan dipped Erica at the end of the dance.
Jake called Krystal to enlist her help with David. Opal offered her services if Jake needed them. After Krystal ended the call, she told her friend what Jake wanted them to do.
At Wildwind, David watched Amanda and Trevor together. When Amanda noticed David, she announced that she refused to change Trevor's name. Surprisingly, David didn't argue about their son's name; he agreed that Trevor was a perfect choice. Amanda was a bit startled when David leaned down to tell his son that he was the joy of his life. The moment was ruined when David decided to lay some ground rules.
David insisted that Jake was not to have any contact with Trevor. Amanda could go anywhere she liked with Trevor, provided she stayed away from Jake. David also made it clear that he didn't want Jake anywhere near Wildwind. According to David, there was no reason that Amanda and David couldn't raise Trevor together, provided Amanda honored David's wishes. Moments later, the hospital paged David.
After David left, Jake showed up at Wildwind. Amanda realized that Jake was responsible for David's departure; however, she remained nervous because she didn't want to risk David finding out that Jake had paid her a visit. Amanda relaxed a bit when Jake assured her that they were safe. Jake then surprised his wife with a gift: a set of wedding rings to replace Kathy's toy rings. Amanda was moved to tears as they exchanged vows before sliding on their wedding rings.
They sealed their recommitment to each other with a kiss. Afterwards, Jake admitted that their separation was temporary. When he asked Amanda to spend some time with him, Amanda had to refuse. She explained that she had agreed that Jake would not be around Trevor. Jake was furious that David continued to manipulate Amanda.
Jake wondered aloud if Amanda would remove her wedding ring in order to appease David. Amanda made it clear that she wouldn't. However, she reminded Jake that they had to play by David's rules, because he held all of the power at that moment. Amanda assured Jake that David would never be able to turn her against Jake.
At the hospital, David walked into an examination room to find Opal waiting for him. Opal complained of chest pains; however, when she revealed that she had lunch with Krystal, David suspected that Opal's emergency was a farce. David was certain that Opal and Krystal were working together to help Jake spirit Amanda and Trevor out of town
Krystal intercepted David in the hallway. He demanded to know what she was up to. Krystal insisted that Jake and Amanda belonged together. Krystal thought that it was wrong of David to wreck another Martin marriage. David laughed at the implication that he had destroyed Krystal's marriage to Tad. He reminded Krystal that the drugged milk had not been responsible for the attraction that Krystal had felt for David. David claimed that Krystal was responsible for the breakdown of her marriage to Tad. David then added salt to the wound by reminding Krystal that she had also lied to David about Marissa.
A short time later, Krystal and Opal spotted Jake. Krystal urged Jake to fight David head-on. She was confident that Jake would prevail, because he had the support of everyone around him.
David stormed into Wildwind, frantically calling out for Amanda. Amanda emerged from the living room, demanding that David lower his voice because Trevor was sleeping. David seemed a bit surprised to see Amanda. Amanda reminded David that she had promised not to disappear with Jake and Trevor. When David questioned if Jake had been there, Amanda opted for the truth. She held up her hand to show David the wedding ring that Jake had given her.
David insisted that he expected Amanda to honor her decision. He invited her to move back with Jake or remain at Wildwind with Trevor; however, she couldn't have Jake and Trevor. When he asked Amanda what her decision was, Trevor woke up crying.
After a fun-filled fishing outing, JR and Marissa went to the cabin to relax. JR told Marissa that David was a banned topic. Mariss agreed, as long as JR promised not to talk about Babe. They agreed, but soon found out that many of the topics they discussed led them down forbidden roads. JR finally decided to tell Marissa the legend of Lover's Leap, and fascinated, Marissa suggested that she and JR follow suit.
JR recoiled and said that they should try it some other time. Marissa thought that he was scared, but JR denied that claim. He told her that he was tired, and she pointed out that he had been tired a lot lately. She told him that he could trust her, and asked JR to let her in. JR looked deeply into her eyes, and finally agreed. JR told her that he'd actually been drinking when he'd previously denied it.
Marissa blasted him for lying, and JR took the blows without flinching. He then softened the jagged edges of their conversation by telling Marissa that he'd invited her because he wanted to be alone with her. He then asked her for a favor, although he knew he had no right. She insisted that he continue to open up, so he asked her to keep his drinking a secret from David, so that David couldn't challenge JR for custody of Little Adam. Marissa paused for a moment, and then readily agreed.
Marissa was worried that she didn't know how best to help JR fight against the demons that alcoholism invited into his life. JR assured her that she had helped by being there and supporting him. Marissa continued to ask questions, and JR thanked her for being the kind of person that he felt completely comfortable with. He confessed that every time he got knocked down by alcohol, he was afraid that he wouldn't get back up. Marissa clasped his hand in hers and told him that they would get through the fight together.
Marissa told JR that she felt horrible knowing how hard JR had to fight against his alcoholism while his family sat back and waited for him to mess up again. JR admitted that he generally didn't deal with it well. JR asked if Marissa would have stuck around had she known on the day that they met how high maintenance JR could be. Marissa described JR quite differently, and the feelings that emerged drew them into a kiss. JR enjoyed it for a moment and then, much to Marissa's dismay, he broke it off prematurely.
Marissa asked why she and JR were able to get so close, only to find themselves left in an awkward position. JR said that the fault was with him, but Marissa wasn't satisfied with that answer. He told her that she wouldn't understand, but Marissa insisted that he be honest with her, anyway. Slowly, painfully, JR revealed that he had cancer.
At ConFusion, Taylor tried to talk over the idea of opening a Comeback-style bar in Pine Valley, but Tad was having a hard time focusing. Before he could get her to repeat what she'd said, Jake showed up. Tad ordered another drink once his brother revealed his poor outlook on life. Tad tried to talk Jake out of his pit of misery, but none of the affirmations Tad offered seemed to work. Taylor finally had enough and told them both to be quiet, as they had no idea what they were talking about.
Taylor told Jake that he needed to take control of his issues with David, but that only elicited a stream of violent thoughts. Tad continued to try to calm his brother down, but realized he failed when Jake decided to leave. Once alone again, Tad sarcastically thanked Taylor for her help. She told him that she called things as she saw them, and Tad suggested that she keep her opinions to herself in the future.
David demanded that Amanda make a choice between her son and her husband. As she listened to Trevor cry over the baby monitor, the torture almost became too much. She told David that he'd not given her a valid choice, slammed her wedding ring down on a nearby table, and went to tend to her son. After she left, David picked up the ring and examined it closely.
Amanda rejoined David in the living room, and David apologized for lashing out at her. He told Amanda that he had been angered by those who had plotted against him, and just wanted to be allowed to raise his son. Amanda said that Trevor deserved to be happy and loved, and noted how sad she was that she couldn't provide her son with that kind of home life. David insisted that Amanda could love Trevor as much as she wanted while at Wildwind, but Amanda made it clear that she would never love David.
Liza sat on the couch at the Slater residence and had a one-way conversation with Ian. Kendall, annoyed by the quality time that Liza got to spend with Ian, stormed upstairs and slammed a door. Liza stopped talking abruptly when she heard the noise, picked up the child, and tentatively peered into the foyer. Zach arrived home, and Liza quietly told him that someone was in the house. Zach instructed Liza to go back into the living room while he checked to see if he could find the source of the noise.
Zach got to the top of the stairs and came face-to-face with Kendall. Silently frustrated, Zach descended the stairs and told Liza that he'd found nothing amiss. Relieved, Liza handed Ian over to Zach and began to ask Zach questions about his visit with Annie. Zach started to reply, and said that Annie wanted to meet with Emma at the Chandler house, but he understood that Emma was scared. Zach was distracted in short order when his son's giggles and yelps of delight drowned out any hope for a continued conversation.
Zach put Ian down for a nap, and when he returned to the living room, Liza resumed the conversation about how to extract needed information from Emma. Zach told Liza that Emma was off-limits because the child had been through enough already. They agreed that they would meet later to determine another way to get Annie to confess. On her way out, Liza offered to watch Ian any time Zach needed, and suggested that they get their sons together for a play date. Zach told her that it wasn't a good idea, so they said their goodbyes and Zach closed the door.
Without missing a beat, Kendall marched into the foyer and said she would give Liza a reality check if Zach didn't. They went back upstairs, and Kendall unleashed about how being confined in her room was worse than her coma because she knew what she was missing. She vented again about how inappropriate it was for Liza to openly want Zach.
Zach assured Kendall that there was nothing between him and Liza, and that Kendall needed to let him handle it. Kendall was unsure that she could, given that Zach never reassured her. She looked at him longingly, but all Zach could tell her was that he didn't have any answers for her.
Zach was frustrated with Kendall's refusal to accept that the feelings Liza had were not mutual. He explained that he kept Liza around as a means to an end, and Kendall asked if she would get to go home to Zach if Liza got her out of jail. Zach declined to discuss the topic any further, so Kendall suggested that Zach could have Liza handle the second Slater divorce, and then stormed out of the room.
Zach retrieved his wife and told her that she didn't get to run away. Kendall said that she didn't have much of a choice when she continued to offer suggestions on how to fix their marriage and Zach refused to act. Zach insisted that Kendall didn't know what was going on in his head, but Kendall seemed to be certain she did. She told him that she didn't know of any other way to apologize for her betrayal, and Zach said he wasn't looking for an apology. Kendall told him to let her know when he had decided what he wanted.
Taylor claimed that Tad's adverse reaction to her opinion had nothing to do with Jake and everything to do with his unwillingness to be in a more serious relationship with her. Tad balked at the suggestion, but Taylor denied him the opportunity to respond and instead said that if Tad wasn't ready to move to the next level, he at least had to be a man and admit it.
Liza heard the last part of the conversation as she walked up and watched Taylor walk away. Liza asked Tad if he wanted to talk, and Tad told her that there wasn't much to share, other than the news that his love life was a wreck. Tad admitted that he only had himself to blame, and half-heartedly toasted to his own misery. Tad agreed with Taylor's assertion that Tad had lost his will to fight, but Liza suggested that perhaps Tad wasn't as interested in Taylor as he thought.
Uncomfortable with Liza's diagnosis of his problems with Taylor, Tad switched tacks and asked if Liza had put the brakes on her feelings for Zach. Liza admitted it wasn't smart, but said that she planned to hang on to her feelings as long as there was a glimmer of hope. Tad asked what would happen to her feelings when Kendall got out of jail, but Liza was convinced that if she was meant to be with Zach, Kendall's release wouldn't make a difference. Tad gave up and said that he needed to stop offering advice, since he couldn't take his own. Liza encouraged Tad to continue seeking out happiness.
Taylor ran into Brot, who needed to lean on a friend on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks. He suggested that they find Frankie and indulge in a "beer and pretzel day. " Having just used that term, Taylor was game for Brot's plans, as long as they could meet somewhere other than ConFusion.
David and Jake ran into each other at the hospital, and David was delighted to return the ring that Jake had given to Amanda. Although David insisted that he'd done nothing to force Amanda's hand, Jake didn't believe David. Jake was able to maintain his cool as David insisted that his life with Amanda and their son was falling into place. Jake waited until after David had finished pushing all Jake's buttons before taking off.
Jake made another unannounced visit to Wildwind and asked Amanda why she'd taken off her wedding ring. Amanda clarified that she would have never done so willingly, and that David had given her an impossible choice. She confirmed her love for Jake repeatedly, and explained how she'd memorized every part of him so that she could get through all of their times apart. Jake admitted his fear that David would take Amanda away from him, and Amanda said that David could never take something that he couldn't touch. Her heart, Amanda pointed out, belonged only to Jake.
Amanda and Jake made love on the living room floor, and afterwards, Jake thanked his wife for reminding him how much they belonged to each other. Amanda asked if Jake wanted to see Trevor, but Jake resisted, because being apart from them was hard enough. They hastily redressed and shared a few additional heated kisses before Jake escaped the house via the solarium.
As Amanda slipped her shoes back on, David appeared in the entranceway to the living room. He glared at her for a few moments, and then accused Amanda of trying to get away with hiding her tears. Amanda claimed that she had allergies and would be fine. David reiterated that he wanted things to work out with them, and as Amanda recalled similar words from Jake, she told David that they would find a way. Across town, Jake recalled the intimate moments he'd shared with his wife, and silently renewed the faith he had in their marriage.
Zach called Liza and told her that they needed to set up the meeting between Annie and Emma. Liza asked what had changed his mind, and Zach said the thought of Kendall locked up in a room had forced him to rethink his opinion. At the same time, Kendall continued to elaborate on her newest novel.
