She befriended an alien in E.T., went on 50 First Dates with Adam Sandler, developed a taste for humans in Santa Clarita Diet, and helped pick The World's Best talent. Now, Drew Barrymore might be tackling the world of daytime.
Variety reports that the Hollywood actress is in New York this week, filming a pilot for a potential talk show for CBS Television Distribution. If the project moves forward, it would likely be under consideration for the 2020-21 season, with Barrymore also serving as an executive producer on the show.
As THR reports, this pilot marks the second time that the actress has considered a move to daytime. She had discussions with Warner Bros. TV in 2016 about a series, but the project never came to fruition. This CBS pilot has potential, however, as the new regime at the network's syndication arm is said to have high hopes for the show and faith in Barrymore's appeal as a daytime TV personality.
If Barrymore's pilot gets a green light, she will join several other high-profile personalities set to host upcoming talk shows, including Kelly Clarkson (NBCUniversal), Tamron Hall (Disney/ABC), and Mel Robbins (Sony). Meanwhile, Jerry Springer is set to return to TV in the court show Judge Jerry (NBCU), and Meredith Vieira will be hosting the game show 25 Words or Less (Fox Television Stations).
UPDATE (October 10, 2019): Drew Barrymore is officially going to be a daytime talk show host, with her new CBS talk show slated to make its debut in the fall of 2020. Not much information has been made available about the focus of the upcoming television project, but Peter Dunn, president of CBS Television Stations, says it is "the brightest prospect I have seen in many years."Says Barrymore of her new venture, "It is beyond my wildest dreams to have this opportunity for a daily talk show. I'm truly thrilled and honored to be creating this show with CBS."
According to industry insiders, CBS has an hour of unprogrammed time in its daytime schedule, meaning that soap fans should not necessarily be concerned about Barrymore's show impacting The Bold and the Beautiful or The Young and the Restless.
