Days of our Lives actress Martha Madison (Belle Black) had a very close call with skin cancer recently, and the actress is hoping that her scary experience can help save fans' lives.
Madison took to Instagram with an unhappy photo of herself in the doctor's office along with the news that her health care provider found melanoma -- a type of skin cancer -- on her back.
"PSA: Get your moles checked!" the actress captioned the photo. "A recent, routine visit to my dermatologist resulted in the discovery of a melanoma on my back. Lucky for me, the doc noticed it because it never would have occurred to me to think anything of it. Today, they carved the sucker out, and I'm so relieved to say that I'm officially melanoma free!"
Madison goes on to say that her cancer diagnosis could have had "a very different outcome" if not for the care and expertise that her dermatologist provided. She added that if fans have "been procrastinating or on the fence about making an appointment, take this as 'a sign' and get to it!"
Madison's on-screen sister Alison Sweeney (ex-Sami Brady) recently experienced a similar situation when she tested positive for skin cancer this summer. Luckily, Sweeney's cancer was caught early, which led the actress to team up with Stand Up to Cancer and share her doctor's advice.
"Check your skin for any noticeable changes and ask your doctor about it!! Even if it seems like nothing, let an expert decide," she wrote. "Early detection of skin cancer gives you the greatest chance for successful skin cancer treatment and prevents it from developing into something more complicated. And of course, use sunscreen (which I do!)."
