In a move that is sure to please longtime viewers, As the World Turns has invited Larry Bryggman (John Dixon) to reprise his popular role one last time before the show ends in September.
In 2004, seemingly without warning, Bryggman, a two-time Daytime Emmy winner, was released after having worked for nearly four decades with the show. No official reason was given at the time, though it was widely believed that money played into the decision. Show sources told Soap Central at the time that Bryggman had been asked to drop to recurring status. Bryggman refused.
"We appreciate the 35 years that Larry has dedicated to As the World Turns," the show's executive producer, Chris Goutman, said in an official statement at the time. "A consummate professional, [h]is portrayal of Dr. John Dixon has been masterful and mesmerizing. We're sorry to see him go."
Bryggman joined the cast of As the World Turns in 1969. He made his final appearance on December 14, 2004. Since that time, the character has seldom -- if ever -- been referred to on-canvas.
Bryggman's return is slated to begin on August 27.
