All My Children fans have to wait to see whether or not their favorite Pine Valley characters will reunite on a primetime reboot of the soap opera, but they don't have to wait to see at least two actors back together again. Fox's Our Kind of People, from Empire executive producer Lee Daniels, reunites Yaya DaCosta (Cassandra Foster) with her Pine Valley mother, Debbi Morgan (Angie Hubbard).
DaCosta enthuses that she is thrilled about the blast-from-the-past casting. "It's such an honor to be working with [Debbi] again in such a different capacity, not as mother and daughter, but as niece and auntie, who are really more like sisters."
Morgan is also thankful for the reunion. "I was so excited," she says. "Working with Yaya back on All My Children, it was like working with this young little girl, you know? And now, I'm with this mature woman, beautiful, serving it up. And I'm like, 'Oh, my God. What do we have here?'"
As Soap Central previously reported, Our Kind of People takes place in the aspirational world of Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard, a historical stronghold where the rich and powerful Black elite have come to play for more than 50 years. It follows DaCosta as strong-willed single mom Angela Vaughan, who sets out to reclaim her family's name and make an impact with her revolutionary hair care line that highlights the innate, natural beauty of Black women. But Angela soon discovers a dark secret about her mother's past that will turn her world upside down and shake up the community forever.
Morgan plays the heavily recurring role of Angela's aunt, Patricia Williams (a.k.a. Aunt Piggy), who moves to Martha's Vineyard with Angela and her teenage daughter, Nikki (Alana Bright). The saucy and inhibited character is working class and makes no bones about it, but she has a lot of common sense when it comes to giving good advice to the sometimes-overwhelmed Angela. Piggy is also hiding a few secrets of her own, including a connection to Oak Bluffs from many years ago.
DaCosta, who was just exiting her six-year run on Chicago Med when the opportunity to join Our Kind of People came about, says she immediately fell in love with the series. "This show is a dream in so many ways. It's so saucy. It's so much fun."
